Dr. Henry Cabrera Celebrates His Passion Project – Lavender Waves Farm

Expansive, serene, and visually stunning, Lavender Waves Farm sprang from Dr. Henry Cabrera’s aspiration to cultivate lavender and share his passion for the plant with others. Nestled in the heart of Rhode Island, this charming 14-acre farm was once known as Gatewood Farms, a historical landmark within the community. In the 1940s, local families frequented the farm to buy farming supplies from a store situated amid Gatewood’s verdant expanses. Back then, the farm was bustling with cows and pigs. Today, an old sign bearing the inscription “Gatewood Farm—Bacon and Sausage” remains in the barn as a tribute to its past.

Farming presents numerous challenges. Previous owners of Gatewood Farm had to part with portions of their land to financially sustain their agricultural endeavors. Over time, the Gatewood family moved away, and the farm changed hands several times until Dr. Henry Cabrera acquired it in 2016. Intent on reviving the farm, he began with essential renovations, upgrading the water system, and bringing electrical power to the barn. Subsequent improvements included constructing three stables with Dutch doors and a section for poultry. Dr. Cabrera also developed grazing pastures to accommodate a variety of farm animals such as sheep, alpacas, llamas, camels, and donkeys.

With the infrastructure in place, Dr. Cabrera laid out plans for a lavender farm. By the summer of 2017, a custom-built gazebo, positioned at the heart of the lavender field, was installed. In 2018, the first circle of lavender plants was set, followed by a second circle the next year. Today, the farm boasts over 4,000 lavender plants encompassing 10 different varieties. By 2020, Lavender Waves Farm opened its gates to the public, quickly becoming a cherished destination within the local community.

Operations at Lavender Waves Farm

Though Dr. Henry Cabrera is an anesthesiologist by profession, he dedicates his free time to preserving the unique experience of Lavender Waves Farm. Depending on the season, the farm employs anywhere from three to ten workers. While the lavender plants don’t bloom year-round, Cabrera emphasizes that the care of the livestock is a daily commitment. The daily routine includes feeding and cleaning the animals. “The farm may slow down in the winter, but it never stops thriving,” he notes.

In the spring, Cabrera and the farm team prune the lavender, which produces a major bloom in June and a second one in October. A group of paid workers assists with harvesting the plants, while volunteers from the Kingston Hill Garden Club of South Kingstown lend a helping hand when needed.

Livestock at Lavender Waves Farm

A unique attraction at Lavender Waves Farm is its camels, which draw significant attention from visitors. The farm is home to Jack and Bingham, two 15-year-old Dromedary camels—the only ones of their kind in Rhode Island. Dromedary camels, known for their single hump, are native to sub-Saharan regions, while their two-humped counterparts, Bactrian camels, originate from colder climates in Asia. The farm also houses a three-year-old camel named Humphrey.

“At Lavender Waves Farm, we are lucky enough to have three out of the five privately held [Rhode Island] camels,” ” Cabrera said. “These giant animals are a spectacular addition to any event as they mesmerize guests with their incredible size.”

Experience with Lavender Waves

The Lavender Waves Experience

Each year, around 2,500 visitors are captivated by the serene beauty of Lavender Waves Farm. Dr. Henry Cabrera’s favorite aspects of the farm include Dolly Llama, his pet llama, the young camel Humphrey, and the farm’s immaculately maintained landscape. “I enjoy seeing everything well-manicured,” he says. “The wagon and entrance path are some of my favorite things on the farm. The path winds quietly through the property, all the while hiding the magnificent field just beyond view.”

Guests can also enjoy a stay at the farm’s rustic on-site Airbnb, a luxurious retreat ideal for couples seeking a romantic or relaxing escape. The space features reclaimed wood from a 150-year-old silo, rustic stone tile, and beams from old structures. The second floor boasts a king-size four-poster bed made from reclaimed wood, offering a stunning view of the lavender fields. A futon made from reclaimed wood accommodates two more guests, and the kitchen and living area also overlooks the fields, providing a calming backdrop of purple blooms. The suite’s bathroom is fitted with Estonian amethyst geode sinks and imported Italian granite, while the shower includes rainfall, a waterfall, and massage jets for ultimate relaxation. Guests have exclusive access to the farm and personal use of the gazebo. As an exclusive adult-only experience, pets are not permitted.

For those wishing to explore beyond the farm, nearby towns such as Westerly, Charlestown, Narragansett, and Newport offer additional activities and accommodations. Foxwoods Casino is a 35-minute drive away, and Mohegan Sun is 50 minutes away.

Lavender Waves Farm: A Passionate Endeavor

Cabrera’s farm is steeped in rich agricultural history. In 2020, the granddaughter of the original owners returned to visit her family’s former land. Overwhelmed with nostalgia, she reflected on her childhood as she admired the beautifully restored farm. As visitors approach, they are greeted by the sight of the white house on the hill, once home to the original owners. Cabrera himself resides in what used to be the store where the Gatewood family sold their produce.

According to the farm’s website, “The unique design of the farm was done to create a special place of beauty, peace, and luxury for visitors,” “By being able to sell the lavender as well as offer the opportunity for a limited number of guests to visit the farm, they will experience a working farm and have the ability for the community to have a place of gathering amongst the rolling waves of lavender.” Dr. Cabrera’s Lavender Waves Farm offers a serene escape from the chaos of everyday life, providing visitors with a peaceful retreat. With the continued support of the community, the farm remains a labor of love, offering joy and tranquility to all who visit for years to come. —Chris Bates
